Tuna Fishing Charter Boat - Gloucester MA

VISIT PAGE ONE

Tuna fishing of Gloucester Ma has become very popular in the last few years because of the abundance of bait and Tuna that has shown up off Gloucester Main the last few seasons.

A typical day of Tuna fishing starts out before sun up. Tuna feed early in the A.M. most times of the year. Tide change is also important when trying to get a Tuna bite. The vessel steams to the Tuna grounds were ever the bite has been the most productive in the preceding days.

The trolling rigs are deployed.
Once the boat has arrived on the grounds, 3-4 rods are set out with lures of different varieties. These are usually top water swimmers so you can watch them swim gracefully through the water like a peaceful school of baitfish.

Waiting for the ambush!

Watch carefully for the Tuna to ambush the rigs! Watch for a swirl behind the rigs - that means a Tuna is ready to strike. Tuna will also "short hit" the rigs and repeatedly jump out of the water - crashing behind the lures. This is quite a site! Some times there is no warning - just an explosion.

The explosion

Even a small tuna 50 lbs will grab the rig and make it look a cast iron tub just fell into the water. A large Tuna will make a splash like a Volkswagen fell from the sky.

Immediately following the explosion the outrigger will loudly twang and the reel will start screaming out line - the excitement begins. The crew will set you up with a fighting belt and coach you through the Tuna battle. You may choose to battle the Tuna yourself or pass the tuna rod to one of your buddies. The crucial time is the last few minutes of the fight. 90% of the tuna that break off are at the back of the boat. When this time comes, if you are fatigued, it is strongly recommended that you pass the rod! Listen carefully to the crew for instructions on how to land your Tuna.

Tuna are brought in through a transom door and measured for legal length. You then can get your photo taken and the fish is either bled, gutted, and iced or tagged and released.

Our other method of catching Tuna;

Live and dead baits can be deadly for Tuna. Live baits are caught in a net set out by the crew and /or caught by you on rod and reel. The boat is then anchored on a productive edge of a bank, these are "Tuna highways". The baits are set out at different depths to entice the passing fish for a snack. Chumming is effective to attract tuna into a feeding mode. While waiting for the bite many clients will jig for the Tuna on lighter rods...the hookup is incredible when you hook a Tuna on a jig!

Our boats are out fitted with Shimano 50 series reels and stand up rods for the pure thrill and feeling the fight and strength of a Bluefin Tuna as well as 130 and 80 Penn Internationals when Tuna over 300 lbs are in the area.

Tuna fishing is not for everyone.

Your first charter boat experience should not be for Tuna. We reccomend going on a   Cod or Haddock trip were you have your own rod in your hand all day contiually reeling, Bass fishing is the same you are sure to catch a good amount of fish yourself on either one of these trips.

After you have caught many fish, then try for Tuna. It will be a catch of a lifetime!

Remember...Always choose a charter boat that is a full-time fishing boat with many charters under their belt..
