We did our last Haddock trip of the season right before Christmas. The fishing was not the lock and load we had the week before , but the weather was nicer and there were still plenty of fish for everyone.

High hook was Paul Pirano who landed 24 nice Haddock as well as some nice Pollock.Paul seemed to have the lucky bucket of bait, or was it skill?
As the temperatures drop well below zero here in Gloucester ice has been forming in the rivers and coves. It has been quite a few years since Gloucester was iced in. I remember the year the river was impassable except for a few hundred feet by the bridge were the tide flows at 4-5 knots keeping the center open. Those were the years we kept the boat at the edge of the open water and dodged icebergs to get out to catch giant Cod all winter long! I had customers lined up waiting for the call of a good weather day. The Kayman Too would steam out about 10 miles and our 80 fish always weighed in well over 1000 pounds, usually back at the dock by noon!
Well as times change and we are not seeing large Cod like that in schools, every one wonders” What happened?”
There are theories of global warming, fish cycles, lack of bait fish and sand eels. Some of the dragger men say it was all the fish that were wasted back in the nineties, the seal population is at unheard of numbers. It is ironic that this did just happen as the Obama administration decided to change the whole fishing system.
As times change there is still plenty of fish to be caught on a days outing, Most days groups landed over 100 fish on the LIsa&Jake. They are not the large Slammers of the years before but still some nice eating fish for everyone to take home.
Before the Obama years, March and April were the months of the best fishing. I have seen that change over the last few years, Our best trips were in July this past season. With the lack of commercial fishing more fish are coming to the inshore grounds. This past year we could fish humps and bumps that we could not before because they were all covered with gill nets. Last early Spring fishing was slow because commercial boats that had to stop fishing in April pounded the grounds 24/7 and did not leave much for the rod and reel guys.
Will 2014  be a different year? With out all the winter pressure on the fish will April be back to normal? I think it will be a good year as the year class of Haddock that is abundant will all be nice fish this season. The fishing regulations are to be the same this year, no limit on catch for rod and reel guys except Cod,9 per person.
