Cod fishing Stellwagon Bank

Monday, March 1st, 2010

I am at the Philly  expo sportshow. Things are going great new
clients are filling the books for Spring Cod trips.
Anglers are disappointed in the delay for Cod trips this year but are
still sighning up for Spring Haddock The abundance of shrimp and eels of Gloucester are promising signs for a great Spring.

The only fish report I have comes from the Kayman Too that has been fishing the jig permit .I only got to take the boat once this week
between shows and was totally amazed of the consistance piles of
Codfish. Every trip has been a short one as the piles of Cod seem to
continue for ever .Every drop has at least two or more fish on it.
All these fish are feeding heavy and don’t appear to be
going anywere soon.
Shared charter dates have been posted thru may log on
www.kaymancharters.com or give us a call befor these spots sell out.
I will be at the Suffren NY show this weekend stop by for some Kayman goodies and grab the show specials.

The prime Gloucester grounds remain open to commercial fishing. A very busy Stellwagon Bank has been producing limits of Cod with most boats returning in a couple of hours. The fish are so thick even the rod and reel boats have been limiting out with lock and load conditions! This is definitely a sign of a healthy fishery and ecosystem as the fish are well feed on eels and herring!
Six Passenger Cod trips Start April 15th this year. Haddock is open all year and those trips will Start in March. With the shortened Spring Cod season the books are filling quick don’t be left out Book your trip before the Shows this week!
Capt. Kevin will be at the Big E this week make sure to stop by and get a few Kayman Goodies. We will have a news letter going out with specials and coupons. Sign up today at www.kaymancharters.com

Cod Fishing Report

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

January Fishing remains Steady as the outside areas fill with herring. Fish chasing bait in January is always a good sign. When the bait remains steady in cold water it provides proof for a healthy ecosystem

Some days are easy to find fish in the same spots but as winter storms move through the bait can shift to new spots. Some days it takes a little looking around for the next trip.
Not a lot of wind this week put anglers on some fair waters for January. Large Pollock were the fish that brought anglers to the gunwale as arms ached and backs were sore. These winter time favorites along with a mix of others make for some great hot chowda on those cold days.

Nov 20 2009

The Kayman Too and the Lisa& Jake continue amazing new clients with the spectacular November fishing!
The large schools of Pollock continue to grow every day as more Larger ones show up and the competition for metal jigs gets fierce among them! This is a fishery that no one can imagine unless the experience it, “as described by many clients”

Still time to get on one of these trips as they usually stay balled up feeding heavily into January.

Don’t forget to ask for a Kayman Charter gift pack for the Holidays. These gifts are good for a single seat on a full or shared charter. They can be purchased at www.kaymancharters.com on the book it trip page.

Nov Haddock Report

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Nov 6 2009

A few bumpy days followed by a flat calm day was a treat for the captains and crew of the Kayman Too and the Lisa&Jake!
Great fishing makes the days seem worth whatever the weather is. It is November so the Target is Large Pollock as well as Haddock. This year has been the bonus for this Combo! Fishing on certain schools of Pollock that are in the spawn,we find that the Haddock lurk below to feed on the spawn. This is making the double hook up of a Large Pollock on the teaser and a nice Haddock on the jig common!  What a perfect combo! Once off the Pollock there are plenty of Haddock to hammer the jigs. Just take your time because of the high speed reels of today with braided line leave little for forgiveness. A lot of Haddock are dropped before being landed. These Haddock have been getting more plentiful through late November into  December the last few years with lock and load conditions being the norm!
Grab your jigs and fill the freezer before it is to late or visit www.kaymancharters .com as there are split trips available this weekend!
Thanks Capt. Kevin

A 35 pound Monkfish on a Cod jig

Oct 30 2009

Cod,Haddock and Pollock were hitting the decks of the Lisa&Jake and the Kayman Too last week as fast as anglers could go!
Large Cod to 30plus pounds were hammering jigs and tubes as they were bounced in the large schools of herring that were the fish were gorging on.
A short ride away large Haddock to 10 pounds were jumping on jigs! These fish are very aggressive and with there soft mouths many were lost in the battle but enough came in to fill the boxes!
The Pollock are starting to be in full swing as some bays Double 20 pounders were being brought to gaff every drop!
Fall fishing can be as good as it gets! Be prepared to bounce around a little as there are more bumpy days this time of year.

On the ride in the fish are filleted. Many birds follow the boat to eat the scraps.  The Gannets are among these birds who will circle high above and dive bomb like a rocket under the water to get bait fish or scraps.
One Gannet could not resist the bucket of fillets on the deck and dove right into them! He was a little shaken up and could not find his way out of the boat. The mate beard carefully avoiding his sharp beak lifted him to safety!
