While tropical storm Danny is putting a dampener on weekend fisherman, weekday clients have enjoyed great weather as well as fishing.

The Tuna bite continues as the water cooled this week and seemed to turn on the bite. Stand-up gear is taken a beating with some of the strongest fish you could ever fight are roaming the waters of Gloucester looking for prey. These fish are spooling 50 series reels with one quick mistake and breaking rods and harness set-ups with the wrong pressure applied! The local tackle shops love it!

The offshore Haddock bite was spectacular this week with some non stop action on bait. Average Haddock was 6 lbs with a few 9-10 lbers mixed in. A few Cod to 20lbs also spiced up the mix. The cooler water temp usually means the fish will move back into the shoals for our great jigging trips in 100 ft of water. Late Sept – Oct is a great time to stock the freezer with nice fillets.

Tuna and Cod Report

The Kayman Too and the Lisa and Jake have been doing Combo Marathon trips this week. Tuna was good the beginning of the week with fish up to 200 lbs landed on lures and baits, A shift in the school did not allow us to hook up on Thursday morning with the groups waiting for the bite with there Cod rods in hand.

The Haddock bite has been great! Clients are into non stop action for Haddock with a mixture of Cod,Cusk and Wolf fish that spice up the catch. Fish have all moved off the bank with the 72 degree water into the cooler depths. Bait has been the ticket to get the Haddock and Cod to take the offering.

Aug Tuna Bite

Tom fights a Bluefin Tuna on Kayman Charters

Bait was hard to come by last week , Just 2 bait were alive in the well when the Lisa&Jake arrived at the fishing grounds. With many critter including Large Bass, Bluefish and Dogfish eating them up it was a risky move with just 2 shots at a Tuna.

Only one bait was deployed at a time to ensure an attack would give us a second chance. Within minutes a large explosion on the bait ensures it is a Tuna!

The Fish was fought by 3 anglers for over an hour before it was brought to gaff! A nice 170lb Bluefin Tuna!

With just one bait left but feeling good that we had the first bite , the bait was deployed. As I let the bait out into the tide a Tuna lunged out of the water and inhaled the bait. This fish was fought by Tom Smotherman who singley whipped the Tuna in 25 minutes! It also weighed in 175 lbs..Congrads to Tom!

Tuna and Cod Report

Danny's 180 lber

Last weeks fishing trips landed Tuna on the overnight trip as well as the day trips. Tuna to 180 lbs were caught on 50 series stand up gear. These are Strong fish! The Dave Lazarro group from NJ have fought many Tuna in the Canyons and said they never thought they would pass a rod! It took 3 seasoned anglers over an hour to land this chunky 180lb Bluefin Tuna. The Todd Carrier group was out the next day and told of the battle, being novice anglers they voted for the large commercial Tuna rods and landed there 160 lb Tuna in 20 minutes.

Jigging for Cod on the rest of the trip was tricky in the shoal water as fish seamed to exit the shoals and the dogs moved in. The groups were taken to deeper water and thats were we found the Cod and Haddock . Cod and Haddock have been really good this year and looks like it will hold through the Summer!
